What a summer it's already been!

Many of us know about the Triple Crown, the trio of annual horse races that showcases the nation’s finest racehorses. But do you also know about the Triple Crown events organized by IACA this past month?

The summer of 2021 has been a bustling time for us, with three major events happening in the space of a month. Please read below for the highlights, in case you were unable to join us.

Grilling at the park: Annual Dragon Boat picnic

After a year break due to COVID, IACA resumed our annual Dragon Boat Picnic tradition at Eagle Creek Park on June 26. Since we reserved our spot early this year, we were able to secure a secluded site that sits on a bluff with a wonderful view of the lake. The turnout set a new record, with more than 70 in attendance: members, their families, and friends. The overcast sky shielded us from what otherwise would have been a very warm sun.

What set this event apart from past events was the large number of young families present, representing not only the second but also the third generation of IACA. Old timers rejoiced at seeing longtime friends again, thankful to find one another emerging well from a very challenging year. While IACA provided hamburgers and hot dogs, many members brought all kinds of delicious dishes to share.

Cheering America’s birthday: CarmelFest July 4 Independence Day Parade

Carmel, Indiana has been voted more than once as the most desirable small city to live in the U.S. While media surveys cite various reasons for this ranking–including the beautiful homes, a world-class performing arts center, and many green spaces–IACA can confirm that it is actually the residents of Carmel who make the place so outstanding. The local citizens are warm, friendly, and welcoming. Come to next year’s Carmelfest parade and experience this for yourself!

This year’s parade was held on July 5. The audience turnout was tremendous and their enthusiasm, judged by the applause we received, was thunderous.  As in the past, IACA invited a number of like-minded groups to join our delegation. These included dancers from the Indiana Chinese Performing Arts Inc., students from Master Ling’s martial arts school, and others. We counted close to 100 participants in our delegation. We had five lion dance teams that performed to the accompaniment of a drum ensemble. Following the parade, everyone was treated to a sumptuous and delicious lunch at Journey restaurant.

IACA would like to express our sincere gratitude to our friends who joined us in the parade. In particular, we value our rich partnerships with other community organizations who joined us in our joy-filled parade delegation. Special thanks to Kwan Hui, who deserves much of the credit for the many hours he invested coordinating this signature event.

Serving our city’s most vulnerable: COVID vaccination campaign

IACA was contacted by several community organizations for support in helping vaccinate some of the most underserved residents in our city.

We gladly participated in two COVID vaccination events: one on July 17 at the International Marketplace’s Global Village (in Indianapolis’ Lafayette Square neighborhood) and another on July 18 at the Black and Minority Health Fair held at the Indianapolis Convention Center.

Our volunteers were very much appreciated by the event organizers. For IACA, it was our way to say to our fellow citizens that we stand solidly with everyone, regardless of background, when it comes to community welfare and wellness.
Please let us know if you would like to take part in similar outreach activities in the future.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY: Join us at Asian Fest 2021
